Belfast City Cemetery

Belfast City Cemetery

Belfast City Cemetery is the city’s largest cemetery opened in 1869. Explore a range of backgrounds whose lives are woven through the fabric of the Belfast story. The cemetery reminds us, that the political and cultural identity of late 19th century Belfast was much more complex.

The cemetery is the city’s largest with around 250,000 burials and, curiously, has a sunken 6ft high wall, running for 100ft that divides the Protestant and Catholic sections.
Explore the history of the cemetery with a visit to the newly launched City Cemetery visitor centre, located at the entrance to the cemetery.
