Clonard Monastery
Built in 1911 the Clonard Monastery replaced a simple brick building on Clonard Street. 100 years on, Clonard has become one of the best loved churches in the island of Ireland steeped with a fascinating history and home to the annual Clonard Novena attracting thousands every year.
The Monastery acted as a safety bunker during the Belfast Blitz in the Second World War. Later on during the conflict, Clonard Monastery would become the meeting places for crucial discussions with Fr Alec Reid, Gerry Adams and John Hume to end the conflict giving the Monastery the title ‘The Cradle of Peace’.
